Your Moving and Storage Tips
Your Six-Week Plan

Six Weeks Out

Moving can be very stressful but with a little planning you can take much of the stress out and have a happy and safe moving experience.

You should start planning your move and storage (if needed) at least six weeks before the big day.  Lets look at a checklist.

Six weeks out:

  1. Take a look at everything you own.  How much do you really need?  Go through everything.  If you haven't used something for ages...do you really need it?  This is a good time to clean house, have a garage sale.  Better yet, sell all access stuff on eBay!

  2. Buy and organizer/folder with many pockets.

  3. Start a check list of everything that needs to be done.  Note when it needs to be completed and include a place to check it off once completed.  This file should be in the first pocket of your organizer.  Actually this should be a note pad...I prefer a legal pad.

  4. Hopefully you already have your new home and know the floor plan.  Buy a "graph" type pad. (The ones with the little blue squares that will allow you to draw each room in scale.  Draw out each room to scale, make sure you include all doors windows, heating and cooling vents etc.)  Plan where each piece of furniture will go.  This save time and stress when you actually move in the new house.  It also helps you decide what you can, or cannot take.  This also goes in your organizer.

  5. Keep a copy of all receipts...put them in a pocket of your organizer.  Worse case scenario, this will help you determine the total cost of your move.  Best case scenario, your moving cost may be paid by your employer or ma even be tax deductible (Check with your accountant) You will now have all receipts located where you can find them.
